متن کاملCritical point of an interacting two-dimensional atomic Bose gas.
We have measured the critical atom number in an array of harmonically trapped two-dimensional (2D) Bose gases of rubidium atoms at different temperatures. We found this number to be about 5 times higher than predicted by the semiclassical theory of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in the ideal gas. This demonstrates that the conventional BEC picture is inapplicable in an interacting 2D atomic g...
متن کاملMoment of inertia and superfluidity of a trapped Bose gas.
The temperature dependence of the moment of inertia of a dilute Bose gas confined in a harmonic trap is determined. Deviations from the rigid value, due to the occurrence of Bose-Einstein condensation, reveal the superfluid behaviour of the system. In the noninteracting gas these deviations become important at temperatures of the order of TcN −1/12. The role of interactions is also discussed. P...
متن کاملProbing an Interacting Bose Gas in a Quasi-two-dimensional Trap
2010 This thesis entitled: Probing an interacting Bose gas in a quasi-two-dimensional trap written by Shih-Kuang Tung has been approved for the Department of Physics Date The final copy of this thesis has been examined by the signatories, and we find that both the content and the form meet acceptable presentation standards of scholarly work in the above mentioned discipline. Probing an interact...
متن کاملKosterlitz-Thouless transition of the quasi-two-dimensional trapped Bose gas.
We use quantum Monte Carlo methods to compute the density profile, the nonclassical moment of inertia, and the condensate fraction of an interacting quasi-two-dimensional trapped Bose gas with up to N ~ 5 x 10(5) atoms and parameters closely related to recent experiments. We locate the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature T(KT) and discuss intrinsic signatures of the onset of superfluidity in the de...
